Source

The source of this water supply is an earth dam whose design capacity is 230,000m3, which was desilted in the year 2000. The reservoir is prone to siltation from its catchment.

Pumping

2 NO. surface pumps coupled to motors pump water to Malalal water supply treatment works 2 km away. A 3-phase electricity line is connected to the main pumping station and treatment works.

Treatment

The water treatment works comprise a full conventional treatment works system. Currently the treatment works system is able to process 836m3/day. The units filter media is old and ineffective stirrers, dozers, pumps are also functioning ineffectively. The whole treatment works requires a complete overhaul to increase efficiency and reduce UFW.

Pipeline

4 km rising main of PVC 150mm Ø class ‘E’ runs from main pumping station at Nundoto dam (source) to Maralal water supply treatment works, this main was installed in 1986 and has since out lived its lifespan, thus prone to recurrent pipe burst

A total of 10 km long distribution network comprising of PVC and GI pipes, 100mm Ø class E has been installed in the supply area in 1986. This distribution lines have deteriorated considerably

Storage

There are 5 major storage tanks located in Maralal water supply treatment works compound

1.       Balancing tank of 840m3 1 in number

2.       Underground masonry tank of 90m3 each 2 in number

3.       Underground masonry tank of 45m3 1 in number

4.       P.S.E tank of 85m3 1 in number

Water demand

Currently there are 750 consumers on connection. The monthly average water production is 25,164m3 against 135,000m3 demand.
