TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Maralal water supply has its source in nundoto earth dam whose design capacity is 230000m3 and catchment area of 62km2. This dam was constructed in 1984 by DCU and was completed in 1986. The population of this town in 1986 was 5000 people and currently the population has grown to 34938 people in 2006.

The water supply however does not serve the whole of maralal location but caters for only three sub-location namely:- Maralal town,shabaa and Milimani which constitutes the supply limit

Rehabilitation of this water supply was done in the year 2000 desilting of dam reservoir and replacement of treatment works dozers and accessories. Implementation of Maralal w/s phase II as proposed in the samburu district development plan 1997-2001 is long over due:-

The monthly average water production is 25164m3 against 51000m demand. The water supply has 750 consumers on connection. However production needs to be increased to cater for the increasing population of maralal town and communities living in its environs. Maralal water supply is clustered among shabaa,ledero , lpartuk and nkeju eEmunj boreholes.
